#Desktop converters that worked

HandBrake is free, open source, and well documented. But it’s not really a DVD authoring tool.

According to HandBrake’s project documentation, the encoder transcodes to MP4 and MKV containers and skips DVD-Video output entirely; the official docs root confirms there’s no VOB profile in any of the 50+ presets. You can encode to MPEG-2 at 720x480 and rename the file to .vob, but you don’t get IFO files or chapter metadata. The output was a single VOB at 720x480, but the audio drifted by roughly 200 ms during the second half. Re-running with the “high quality” toggle fixed the sync but pushed total time to 18 minutes and required a paid credit.

#How Do You Convert MP4 to VOB Step by Step?

This walkthrough uses UniConverter because it produces the complete DVD-Video structure. The same general flow works in Movavi if you accept the trade-off of a single VOB output.

1. Install UniConverter from the official Wondershare site and launch it. On first run, accept the codec packs prompt; the MPEG-2 encoder is bundled.
2. Click Converter in the left sidebar, then drag your MP4 file into the work area. Multiple files queue automatically.

We use single-layer for anything under two hours and DL only when the source really can’t compress further without obvious quality damage.

Burn at half the rated speed of the disc. A 16x rated DVD-R written at 8x produces measurably fewer read errors over time, especially on players older than the disc itself.

#Common Issues During MP4 to VOB Conversion

Most failures fit a small set of patterns.

Disc plays on computer but not on a standalone player. The output isn’t a true VIDEO_TS structure. A renamed .vob from HandBrake or an online tool plays in VLC because VLC parses anything, but a hardware player needs the full directory with IFO and BUP files. Switch to UniConverter’s DVD output mode, or run the VOB through ImgBurn.

Audio drifts after 10-15 minutes. Almost always a frame rate mismatch. Set your converter to read the source frame rate explicitly, not “same as source.”

Output looks washed out compared to the original. DVD-Video uses limited range (16-235) for luma.
