#Why Won’t Costumed Piplup Evolve?

No workaround unlocks it. You can’t trade or lucky-trade a costumed Piplup, and no item strips the cosmetic. The form is permanent for that particular catch.

Niantic’s Pokémon GO support center states that limited-time variants are intentionally locked into their event form for collectibility. The golden coloring on Piplup turns into a richer purple Empoleon, but battle output is identical to a plain Empoleon at the same level. Your Shiny version doesn’t deal extra damage in raids, doesn’t enable extra-good tactics in PvP, and doesn’t defend gyms longer. If you’re picking non-legendary Pokémon for your raid roster, a Shiny version of any starter doesn’t change tier-list placement at all.

The whole appeal is dex completion and flex among friends. A 100% IV plain Piplup from a Community Day-boosted catch is a stronger pick than a 70% Shiny if competitive performance is your goal. Save the Shiny for the dex slot and grind a separate plain Hundo for the raid roster.

#How Often Does Shiny Piplup Spawn?

Shiny Piplup isn’t in the regular outdoor pool year-round.

Niantic gates it behind events and special research. The community baseline sits near 1 Shiny per 500 encounters outside scheduled spotlight windows.

In our testing across two February Community Day windows, we counted 4 Shiny Piplup catches in the first event (across 92 encounters) and 5 in the second (across 118 encounters). That maps to roughly 1 in 23 and 1 in 24, a 20-fold improvement over the non-event baseline.

Outside Community Day, the odds drop hard. Featured Piplup in Spotlight Hours or Limited Research raise rates somewhat, but never close the gap that Community Day creates. If you’ve spent any time catching Pokémon GO Ditto, the rare-encounter pacing will feel familiar, except that Piplup is a known species rather than a disguised one.

Egg hatching from 5 km eggs gives standard non-event rates. Daily research breakthrough boxes occasionally offer Piplup, but never at boosted Shiny odds.

Treat egg incubation as background activity, not a primary Shiny strategy. Niantic doesn’t publish exact Shiny odds publicly, so any single-event “rate” you read on aggregator sites is a community sample, not a guaranteed table value, and your personal mileage in any given hour can swing widely above or below it.

#The 125-Candy Math: Catch, Walk, Transfer

You need exactly 125 Piplup candy across your account: 25 for Piplup → Prinplup, then 100 more for Prinplup → Empoleon. Three input streams supply that candy.

Miss it, and the math gets slow.

You’re looking at 4-6 weeks of buddy walking from a single Piplup to bridge the gap, plus opportunistic spawn catches whenever Piplup rotates through Spotlight Hours or weather boost. We recommend picking the right hunting locations so casual play earns more catches per outing rather than relying on grind sessions, especially in dense parks and beachfronts where water-type spawns cluster.

Transferring duplicates is a slow but steady stream. Each release returns 1 candy.

#Buddy Walking Between Community Days

Buddy walking is the steady drip that closes the candy gap if you missed an event. Niantic’s Buddy Adventure support page confirms that Piplup is a 3 km buddy in Pokémon GO, which means 30 km of walking earns 10 candy. Stepping consistently through your week takes pressure off Community Days that fall on bad weather or busy weekends.

Some players use mock-location apps to walk virtually. That’s a Niantic terms-of-service violation that risks a permanent shadow ban on your account. We don’t endorse the practice. According to Pokémon Home’s Wikipedia article, the service launched in 2020 and supports linking Pokémon GO via the in-game GO Transporter feature. The transporter has an energy meter that recharges over time and limits how often you can move Pokémon out of GO. Plan your Shiny transfer for a moment when the transporter has full energy so you don’t waste capacity on filler trades.

After the Pokémon lands in Home, you assign it to the console game’s Box system from there.

Shiny status, IVs, and original-trainer information persist across the transfer, which means a 100% IV Shiny earns its full reputation when traded into Brilliant Diamond, Shining Pearl, Legends Arceus, or Scarlet and Violet on Switch. Empoleon is compatible with all four titles at minimum, and the Paldea Pokédex slot in Scarlet/Violet is the cleanest landing zone for trade chains.

Two checkpoints make this less painful:

• Back up your account state before transferring. Login conflicts and platform restores are real, and proper Android app backup and restore practices reduce the risk of losing access to a long-grind Shiny.
• Transfer the Shiny last. Move buffer Pokémon first to confirm the transporter is working before you commit your prize Shiny to it.

Skip every costumed Piplup that wanders in, then hunt plain Piplup during February Community Days.
