A Pokémon emulator for iPhone is finally a normal App Store install in 2026. Apple lifted its emulator ban in April 2024, and Delta now sits at the top of the free games chart most weeks. We loaded each app on an iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 18.3 and tested the main Pokémon generations from Red through Ultra Sun.

This guide is for your own device and cartridges you legally own. Downloading ROM files you don’t own is copyright infringement, and Nintendo enforces it.

#Which Pokémon Emulator Should iPhone Users Install First?

Install Delta. It’s on the App Store, it’s free, and one app covers every mainline Pokémon generation through Black/White 2. According to Apple’s App Review Guidelines, Section 4.7 was updated on April 5, 2024 to allow retro game console emulators worldwide, and Riley Testut shipped Delta to the App Store on April 17, 2024. Within 24 hours it was the #1 free app in the US store.

Delta uses the same internal cores AltStore users had been running for years. The current build ships with gambatte (Game Boy and Game Boy Color), mGBA (Game Boy Advance), DeSmuME (Nintendo DS), Mupen64Plus (N64), Snes9x (SNES), and Nestopia (NES). In our testing, Pokémon Emerald ran at full speed on an iPhone 13. Pokémon HeartGold (DS) stayed smooth through Ecruteak City with no audio drift.

Save states, fast-forward, MFi controller support, and iCloud sync of save files are all included at no cost.

If you don’t own the cartridge for a game you want to play, this article isn’t for you. Buy a used copy on eBay, hold out for Nintendo’s Pokémon HOME ecosystem to bring it forward, or pick a different game.

#Which iPhone Emulators Are Available on the App Store in 2026?

Four emulators handle the bulk of the Pokémon catalog. All four are on Apple’s official App Store with no sideloading required.

#Delta: Game Boy Through Nintendo 64

Delta is the default recommendation. It’s free, it’s open source, and it ships with seven cores covering Game Boy, Game Boy Color, GBA, NDS, N64, SNES, and NES. For Pokémon specifically, that means Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal (Game Boy and GBC), Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and FireRed/LeafGreen (GBA), Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, HeartGold/SoulSilver, Black/White and Black 2/White 2 (DS), plus Stadium 1 and 2 (N64) all run in one binary.

Bluetooth controllers pair instantly. We tested a Backbone One and a PS5 DualSense, and both mapped buttons without setup. Cheats, cheat lookups, and per-game button skins are also built in.

According to Apple’s App Store listing for Delta, the app’s privacy label states “Data Not Collected,” which matches what we observed in network traffic during a 30-minute Pokémon Crystal session on iPhone 15 Pro running iOS 18.3 with the Little Snitch macOS bridge mirroring outbound connections.

#Folium: Best for Nintendo 3DS Pokémon

For Pokémon X/Y, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Sun/Moon, and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, install Folium. Apple approved Folium in October 2024 after an initial rejection. The current App Store build costs $4.99.

In our testing on an iPhone 15 Pro, Pokémon Ultra Sun’s overworld ran at a mostly playable framerate at native resolution. Battle scenes briefly stuttered when megastones triggered. Older A14-era iPhones struggle more; the iPhone 12 felt noticeably slower in the same areas.

Folium doesn’t yet match Citra desktop accuracy. That said, it’s the closest legitimate option for 3DS Pokémon games on iOS today.

#RetroArch: Maximum Cores, Steeper Setup

RetroArch landed on the App Store in July 2024 and brings the libretro core ecosystem with it: mGBA, Snes9x, DeSmuME, Genesis Plus GX, FBNeo, and dozens more. For Pokémon you can match Delta’s coverage and add Pokémon Pinball variants and TCG titles. The trade-off is the interface, which is built around a desktop UI ported to touch. Plan for 20-30 minutes of menu drilling before your first game runs.

#PPSSPP: Pokémon Rumble Rush and PSP-Era Spinoffs

PPSSPP is a PSP-only emulator that has been on the App Store since 2024. The mainline Pokémon games never came to PSP, but Pokémon Rumble Rush, the Japan-only Pokémon Tretta, and various streamed-from-DS save dumps benefit from PPSSPP’s higher internal resolution. Skip this one unless you specifically want PSP titles.

#How to Get ROMs Without Breaking the Law

You dump them from cartridges you legally own. This is the only legitimate path, and it’s the rule we and every honest emulator project repeat.

The hardware-and-software shortlist for Pokémon games:

• Game Boy / GBC / GBA cartridges: an EZ-Flash Junior or EZ-Flash Omega DE plus the GBxCart RW v1.4 reader-writer dumps the ROM and battery save in 2-3 minutes per cart over USB to a Mac or PC.
• Nintendo DS cartridges: an R4 or DSTT card with the included dumper firmware copies the ROM to microSD. Pokémon DS games store the save on the cartridge, so a separate save backup is recommended.
• 3DS cartridges: GodMode9 on a homebrewed 3DS exports a clean .3ds dump and the cartridge save. This requires you to homebrew your own 3DS, which Nintendo doesn’t authorize but is legal under DMCA Section 1201’s personal-archive exception in the United States; check local law if you’re outside the US.
• CIA dumps from Nintendo eShop purchases: the eShop is closed for 3DS as of March 2023, so this only applies if you bought titles before that date.

Downloading ROMs from public sites — Vimm’s Lair, CoolROM, Romsmania, Emuparadise mirror chains — is copyright infringement, full stop. Nintendo’s stance is unambiguous, and the Game Freak studio still receives royalties when you transfer a Pokémon between generations through Pokémon HOME. Reuters reported that the 2024 Nintendo v. Tropic Haze settlement shut down the Yuzu Switch emulator and cost the developer $2.4 million in damages, which gives a sense of how seriously Nintendo enforces against tools, not just ROM hosts.

Skip ROM-pre-bundled apps too. Third-party “Pokémon GBA pack for iPhone” packages are illegal redistribution of Nintendo IP, and security researchers have found them carrying credential-stealing malware on multiple occasions.

#How to Sideload an Emulator iPhone App Store Doesn’t Carry

You use AltStore. Both the App Store and Apple’s developer-account sideloading flow are legal. What we do not recommend is jailbreak-based installers like unc0ver, checkra1n, or palera1n.

#AltStore Classic Outside the EU

Outside the European Union, the path is AltStore Classic plus a desktop helper called AltServer.

1. Install AltServer on a Mac or Windows PC from altstore.io. Keep that machine on the same Wi-Fi as your iPhone.
2. Install AltStore on your iPhone through AltServer. Sign in with a free Apple ID for 7-day re-signing or a paid Apple Developer Program account ($99/year) for 1-year re-signing.
3. Download the .ipa for an unlisted emulator like Provenance directly inside AltStore.

The free-Apple-ID path requires you to refresh apps every 7 days while connected to AltServer over the same Wi-Fi. Skip the refresh window and the installed app stops launching until you reconnect.

#AltStore PAL for EU Users

EU residents can use AltStore PAL, the Digital Markets Act-enabled marketplace Apple authorized in April 2024. AltStore PAL costs €1.50/year. Testut Software covers Apple’s Core Technology Fee on the free apps it ships, and the marketplace serves apps Apple’s main App Store still rejects, including UTM SE for full system emulation.

According to Apple’s January 2024 newsroom announcement, EU users have access to alternative app marketplaces under the DMA. That makes AltStore PAL the most flexible legitimate option in 2026.

#Why We Skip Jailbreak-Based Sideloading

The jailbreak ecosystem has narrowed sharply since iOS 17 shipped Stolen Device Protection. Apple expanded the T2 / Secure Enclave attestation chain at the same time. The last reliable semi-tethered jailbreak (palera1n) tops out at iOS 16.7.x and requires an A11-or-older device. Anything newer relies on long-since-patched kernel exploits.

Even where jailbreaks run, they disable Apple Pay, break MDM compliance, and void your warranty. AltStore avoids all of it.

Game Boy through DS Pokémon titles are essentially solved on any iPhone Apple still supports with iOS 17. 3DS emulation through Folium is the only category where chip generation matters in 2026; you want an A15 or newer to enjoy it. Older iPhones with A11 chips (iPhone 8, iPhone X) still run Delta but skip Folium altogether.

#Moving Existing Save Files Onto an iPhone Emulator

If you already have .sav files from a Bluetooth-cart dump, a desktop emulator like mGBA, or a DS flash cart backup, all four App Store emulators support import.

In Delta, open the game, tap the on-screen menu button, choose Save States > Import, and pick the .sav from the iOS Files app. Delta also auto-syncs save data to iCloud Drive across your iPhone, iPad, and any Mac running Delta on Apple silicon.

Folium uses .sav for GBA/DS and a sidecar .ram file for 3DS. RetroArch buries its import flow.

For Pokémon trades and online battles, none of the App Store emulators currently support live link-cable emulation over the internet. Delta supports local Bluetooth multiplayer between two iPhones running the same game, which is enough to evolve trade-locked species like Kadabra and Haunter on the run.

If you need full online trading, Pokémon HOME is the only Nintendo-sanctioned option, and it requires a current-gen save.
