#7. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

EarthBound is the oddball pick. It’s a turn-based JRPG that uses payphones as save points, ATMs for banking, and yo-yos as weapons.

According to Wikipedia’s EarthBound article, it released in North America on June 5, 1995, the same year as Chrono Trigger. The game is set in a fictional Eagleland modeled on 1990s America, with a salsa-reggae-dub soundtrack that sits nowhere near Nobuo Uematsu’s Final Fantasy work.

We played the Switch Online version. Combat uses a rolling HP meter that lets you cure mortal wounds mid-fight, which is a mechanic Final Fantasy never copied. Short, 25 hours, and one of the most emotionally hit-or-miss games on this list.

#12. Kingdom Hearts III

Kingdom Hearts III is here because Square Enix made it, Tetsuya Nomura directed it, and Yoko Shimomura’s score pulls from the same symphonic well as Final Fantasy.
