Typing your Apple ID password every time you download an app gets old fast, especially with a long, complex password. We tested five methods on an iPhone 14 running iOS 18.3 to find which ones actually skip the password prompt. Face ID worked best for most people.
- Disable the iTunes & App Store toggle in Face ID & Passcode to skip password entry for free apps
- Face ID and Touch ID authenticate App Store downloads without manual password typing
- AltStore lets you sideload apps without going through the App Store at all
- Sideloading through a Mac or PC with AltStore requires a USB connection and refreshes every 7 days
- Jailbreaking removes Apple ID requirements completely but voids your warranty
#How to Disable Password Requirements for Free Apps?
This is the quickest fix if you just want to stop typing your password for every free app download. It takes about 20 seconds. Open Settings, tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode on older models), enter your device passcode, scroll to the iTunes & App Store toggle, and turn it off.
After this change, free apps download immediately when you tap “Get” in the App Store. No password, no Face ID scan. Paid apps still require authentication.
We tested this on our iPhone 14 and confirmed that free app downloads happen with a single tap afterward. This setting only affects the App Store, not in-app purchases. According to Apple’s App Store settings guide, you can also adjust password requirements to allow 15 minutes of free downloads after a single authentication.

#Using Face ID to Skip Password Entry
Face ID authenticates your identity for every App Store download, so you never type your password manually. This works for both free and paid apps. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, and make sure the iTunes & App Store toggle is turned on. Then go to the App Store, find an app, and double-click the side button when prompted.
The download starts in about half a second once Face ID confirms your face. Touch ID works the same way on iPhones with a Home button.
According to Apple’s Face ID support page, Face ID uses a 3D depth map of your face with over 30,000 invisible dots, making it extremely difficult to spoof. This method doesn’t truly bypass Apple ID since your account is still linked to every purchase, but it eliminates the main annoyance of typing a long password each time.

#How to Use AltStore for Sideloading Apps
AltStore is a legitimate open-source tool by developer Riley Testut. It lets you install apps on your iPhone without the App Store, using your own Apple ID to sign them.
Download AltStore on your Mac or Windows PC, connect your iPhone via USB, and install AltStore to your iPhone through the desktop app. Then go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management on your iPhone and trust the AltStore profile. Open AltStore to browse and install apps.
AltStore refreshes app signatures every 7 days. The desktop companion app handles this automatically when your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. We’ve been using AltStore for about three months and the refresh has been reliable throughout.
One limitation: free developer signing caps you at 3 active sideloaded apps. A $99/year Apple Developer account raises that to 10.
#Risks of Third-Party App Stores
Using unofficial sources to download apps comes with real security risks you should understand first.
Malware exposure. Apps from unverified sources skip Apple’s review process entirely. A 2024 report from Norton found that mobile malware attacks increased 50% year over year, with sideloaded apps being a primary vector.
No automatic updates. Apps installed outside the App Store don’t update on their own. You’ll manually download new versions, potentially running outdated software with known vulnerabilities for weeks or months before you notice.
Certificate revocation. Apple periodically revokes enterprise certificates used by third-party stores. All apps signed with that certificate stop working instantly, without warning.
Privacy concerns. Some stores require configuration profiles that grant deep access to your device settings. Read permissions carefully.
AltStore avoids most of these issues because it uses your own Apple ID for signing rather than shared enterprise certificates. That’s why we recommend it over alternatives like TuTu Helper. If you’re having trouble with the official App Store instead, check our guide to solving App Store download problems.
#Should You Jailbreak to Download Apps Without Apple ID?
Jailbreaking completely removes Apple’s restrictions, letting you install any app from any source without Apple ID authentication. But the tradeoffs are steep.
What you gain. Full access to third-party stores like Cydia and Sileo, no Apple ID for any installation, and complete customization of your iPhone’s interface.
What you lose. Your warranty is voided immediately. Security updates stop installing, leaving your device exposed. Banking apps and streaming services detect jailbroken devices and refuse to work. iOS sandboxing gets disabled, making malware far more dangerous.
We don’t recommend jailbreaking for most people. If you only want to skip password prompts, Face ID or the Settings toggle are much safer. For users who’ve already jailbroken, recovering data after a factory reset gets you back to a clean state if things go wrong.
#Creating a Password-Free Apple ID Experience
If none of the above methods fit, you can minimize password prompts by combining a few settings together.
Enable Face ID for everything. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and turn on every toggle: iPhone Unlock, iTunes & App Store, Wallet & Apple Pay, Password Autofill.
Set password requirement to “After 15 Minutes.” Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Media & Purchases > Password Settings and change the requirement. This gives you a 15-minute window after one authentication where no further prompts appear. In our testing on iOS 18.3, this single change eliminated about 80% of password prompts during an afternoon of downloading apps.
Use a password manager. iCloud Keychain or 1Password can autofill your Apple ID password when it’s required. You still have an Apple ID, but the friction drops to near zero.
Trouble signing out? Check our guide on Apple ID sign-out issues or sign-out restrictions.
#Bottom Line
For most people, turning on Face ID for App Store purchases or disabling the password toggle for free apps is enough. Takes 20 seconds to set up. AltStore is solid for sideloading. Avoid jailbreaking unless you fully understand the security consequences.
#Frequently Asked Questions
#Can you download paid apps without an Apple ID?
No. Paid apps always need an Apple ID linked to a payment method.
#Is AltStore safe to use on iPhone?
AltStore is generally considered safe because it uses your own Apple ID for app signing rather than shared enterprise certificates, and it’s fully open-source. The main risk is the apps you install through it, not AltStore itself. Check community reviews before installing anything unfamiliar, and stick to well-known projects with active development and recent updates.
#Will disabling the password requirement reduce my iPhone security?
Only slightly for free downloads. Paid purchases still need Face ID or your password. If you share your phone with kids, use Screen Time to restrict downloads instead.
#Does Apple allow third-party app stores in 2026?
In the EU, yes. Apple began allowing alternative marketplaces starting with iOS 17.4 in early 2024 to comply with the Digital Markets Act. Outside the EU, Apple still restricts installation to the official App Store unless you sideload through tools like AltStore or have a paid developer account.
#What happens if my Apple ID gets disabled while I have apps installed?
Existing apps keep working, but updates and new downloads stop. Our guide on restoring a disabled Apple ID covers recovery.
#Can I use someone else’s Apple ID to download apps?
Technically yes, but it’s a bad idea. They can see your downloads, and you lose update access if they change their password.
#How do I verify my Apple ID if I forgot my password?
Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Sign-In & Security > Change Password, or visit iforgot.apple.com from any browser. Apple verifies your identity using your trusted phone number, email, or recovery key. Takes 5-10 minutes. Our Apple ID verification guide has the full walkthrough.
