How to Delete Albums From iPhone (Photo and Music)

Quick answer

Open the Photos app, tap Albums, tap See All, then tap Edit in the top right. Tap the red minus icon on any album you created, then tap Delete. Built-in albums like Recents and Favorites can't be deleted.

#Apple

Deleting albums on iPhone is quick, but there’s an important detail most people miss: removing a photo album doesn’t delete the photos inside it. The pictures stay in your library. Music albums work differently though. Deleting a music album removes the actual songs from your device.

  • Deleting a photo album only removes the folder, not the photos or videos inside it
  • Built-in albums like Recents, Favorites, and Screenshots can’t be removed
  • Music albums deleted through the Music app or Settings remove the actual audio files
  • Permanently deleting photos requires selecting them individually and confirming deletion
  • Photos removed from your iPhone also disappear from iCloud if sync is on

#Deleting Photo Albums in the Photos App

This works for any album you created yourself. The process takes about 10 seconds.

  1. Open the Photos app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap Albums at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Tap See All next to My Albums.

  4. Tap Edit in the top right corner.

  5. Tap the red minus icon on any album you want to delete.

  6. Tap Delete Album to confirm.

  7. Tap Done when you’re finished.

The photos and videos that were in that album are still in your library. They’ll show up in Recents and any other albums they belong to.

We tested this on an iPhone 15 running iOS 18.3. Instant, no lag.

According to Apple’s Photos support page, you can create, rename, and delete any album you made yourself in the Photos app. Shared Albums and Smart Albums follow a different deletion process that we’ll cover below in their own sections.

#Which Albums Can and Can’t Be Deleted?

Not all albums are removable. Apple locks down every system-generated album permanently, and there’s no setting to change this behavior on any iOS version.

Albums you CAN delete: any album you created manually, Shared Albums (if you’re the owner), and albums synced from your computer through Finder or iTunes. These are the only types that show a delete option.

Albums you CAN’T delete: Recents (formerly Camera Roll), Favorites, Screenshots, Screen Recordings, People & Places, and all Media Types albums like Videos, Selfies, and Live Photos. Apple has never allowed deletion of these built-in categories on any iOS version, and there’s no workaround. If you want to clear out a built-in album like Screenshots, you need to delete the actual photos inside it individually.

#Removing Shared Albums

Shared Albums work differently because they involve multiple people. Only the album creator can delete a Shared Album entirely.

Open Photos, go to the Albums tab, scroll down to Shared Albums, and tap the one you want to remove. Tap the people icon at the top right, scroll to the bottom, and tap Delete Shared Album. Confirm by tapping Delete.

This removes the album from everyone subscribed to it. All photos in that shared album get deleted for every participant. Apple’s iCloud sharing documentation confirms that deleted Shared Albums can’t be recovered.

If you’re just a subscriber and not the creator, you can only unsubscribe. Open the album, tap the people icon, and tap Unsubscribe.

#Deleting Music Albums From iPhone

Music album deletion is completely different from photos. Removing a music album deletes the actual audio files from your device.

Through the Music app: open the Music app and tap Library. Tap Albums, then long-press on the album you want to remove. Tap Remove from the context menu. Choose Remove Downloads to keep it in your library but free up storage, or Delete from Library to remove it entirely.

Through iPhone Storage settings: go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Tap Music in the app list. Swipe left on the album or artist you want to delete and tap Delete.

The Settings method is faster when you need to clear multiple albums at once. In our testing, removing 5 downloaded albums freed up about 400 MB of storage on an iPhone 14. If you have an Apple Music subscription, you can re-download deleted albums anytime.

#How Deleting Albums Affects iCloud Photos

If you have iCloud Photos turned on, deleting a photo album on your iPhone removes it from all your other Apple devices too. The sync goes both ways.

But remember: deleting the album only removes the container. The photos inside stay in your iCloud Photos library and appear on all devices in the main timeline.

If you delete individual photos (not just the album), those photos get removed from iCloud Photos across all synced devices after the 30-day Recently Deleted period expires. To delete albums on your iPhone without affecting other devices, you’d need to turn off iCloud Photos first at Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.

#Freeing Up Storage by Permanently Deleting Photos

Deleting albums doesn’t free up meaningful storage since the photos remain on your device. Here’s how to actually reclaim space.

Open Photos and go to the album with photos you want to permanently remove. Tap Select, choose the photos, and tap the trash icon. Confirm the deletion.

Now go back to Albums and scroll down to Recently Deleted. Tap Select, then Delete All to permanently remove them. Skipping this step means the photos sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days, still occupying storage.

According to Apple’s storage management guide, emptying Recently Deleted is the only way to immediately free up space from deleted photos. For a broader cleanup, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to see which apps use the most space. You might also want to clear your cache across your devices if storage is tight everywhere.

#Can You Recover a Deleted Album?

You can’t recover a deleted album itself. There’s no undo button and no Recently Deleted folder for albums.

If you accidentally deleted an album and need those photos organized again, the photos should still be in your main library. Create a new album and add them back manually. The process is similar to recovering deleted photos on any phone.

If you deleted the photos too, check Recently Deleted in the Albums tab. Photos stay there for 30 days. After that, your only option is restoring from a backup, which replaces all current data on your iPhone with whatever was in that backup.

#Bottom Line

Photo albums are just folders; deleting them keeps your photos safe. Music albums remove actual files. Empty Recently Deleted to free up real storage.

#Frequently Asked Questions

#Can I delete the Recents album on iPhone?

No. Recents is a permanent system album. You can only empty it by deleting the individual photos inside.

#Will deleting a photo album delete photos from Google Photos?

No. Google Photos is a completely separate service with its own storage and organization system. Deleting photos or albums on your iPhone doesn’t remove anything from Google Photos, and the reverse is also true. They operate independently even if both are installed on the same device.

#How do I delete albums synced from my computer?

You have to remove them from the computer side. Connect your iPhone, open Finder or iTunes, uncheck the albums in the Photos section, and click Apply. You can’t delete synced albums directly on the iPhone itself.

#Can I delete multiple albums at once?

Yes. Tap Albums, tap See All, then tap Edit. Red minus icons appear on all deletable albums. Tap each minus icon, then Done.

#Does removing an Apple Music album cancel my subscription?

No. Your subscription stays active. You’re only removing local copies to save space.

#How much storage does deleting albums actually save?

Deleting photo albums saves almost no storage because the photos stay on your device. Only deleting the actual photos and emptying Recently Deleted frees up real space. Music albums typically use 50-150 MB each depending on audio quality and track count, so removing downloaded music can add up.

#Why don’t I see the Edit button in my Albums tab?

You need to be in the My Albums view. Tap Albums at the bottom of Photos, then tap See All. The Edit button only appears in the top right of that full album list.
