When you tap install on an iOS update, your iPhone sends the downloaded file’s hash to Apple’s servers to confirm it’s valid. That’s the “Verifying Update” step. It normally takes 2-5 minutes.
If Apple’s servers are slow (common right after a major iOS release) or if your Wi-Fi drops during verification, the process hangs. A corrupted download also causes this. According to Apple’s iOS update documentation, if verification fails, the right move is to delete the update file and try a fresh download from a stable connection.

During the first 24-48 hours after Apple releases a major iOS update, millions of iPhones hit the same server simultaneously. Verification can legitimately take 15-30 minutes.
We tested this on an iPhone 14 Pro running iOS 17.3. On the day iOS 17.4 launched, the verification step took 22 minutes before completing on its own. Under 30 minutes of waiting is not a stuck update.
If the screen is completely unresponsive to touch, that’s a genuine freeze. Move directly to Method 3.

#Method 1: Delete the Update File and Re-Download
This works for about 70% of stuck verification cases. A partially downloaded file can’t pass Apple’s integrity check.
Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Scroll to find the iOS update file in the list. Tap it, then tap Delete Update and confirm.
After deleting, go to Settings > General > Software Update and re-download the update on a strong Wi-Fi connection. If you’re on an older iOS version, look under Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage instead.
#Method 2: Toggle Airplane Mode
Toggling Airplane Mode resets all wireless radios and forces your iPhone to reconnect to Wi-Fi fresh. Open Control Center and tap the airplane icon. Wait 30 seconds, then tap it again to reconnect.
Once Wi-Fi reconnects, go back to Settings > General > Software Update and try again.

iPhone 8 and later: Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 7: Hold Volume Down and Sleep/Wake together until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Home and Sleep/Wake together until the Apple logo appears.
After the restart, connect to Wi-Fi and go to Settings > General > Software Update to try again.

If Wi-Fi keeps dropping during verification, resetting network settings clears the underlying connectivity problem. Note that this erases all saved Wi-Fi passwords.
Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. On iOS 15 and earlier, this is at Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
According to Apple’s documentation on resetting network settings, this removes saved Wi-Fi passwords, VPN configurations, and cellular settings. Enter your passcode, confirm, and reconnect to Wi-Fi after the restart.

Updating through a computer bypasses over-the-air verification entirely. No Wi-Fi needed.
In our testing on an iPhone 13 and iPhone 15 Pro, this worked every time OTA updates were stuck. When the wireless method keeps failing, this is the one to reach for. The whole process takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.
Open Finder (macOS Catalina or later) or iTunes (Windows or older Mac). Connect your iPhone with a USB cable. Select your device, then click Check for Update (Finder) or Update (iTunes).
Keep the cable connected throughout. The process takes 10-20 minutes. If your iPhone isn’t detected, swap the cable. Many third-party cables won’t pass data.
#Method 6: Use iOS Repair Software
